Two more variants for i20 models

The second-largest automaker in the domestic market and the largest exporter of passenger vehicles in the Indian market, Hyundai Motors India has recently announced the launch of two more variants in the much-popular i20 series in the Indian market.Coupled with the existing models, the all new i20 will be available in two new variants – the Era and the Sportz. Coming equipped with the award winning technology, the new variants boasts of many new features in the product. The Era variant will be offered in both petrol and diesel variants while the Sportz variant is aiming to bridge the price and feature gap between the Magna and Asta.The new versions launched by the automaker were Era and Sportz. With the base model priced at Rs. 4.52 lakh Era has now replaced Magna (priced at 4.91 lakh for the base model) as the new entry level i20 model. Base model of the Sportz is priced at Rs. 5.32 lakh between Magna and the top-end model Asta, which costs up to Rs. 7.48 lakh.

Hyundai i20 successor

The i20 is the successor to the Getz and will replace it in Europe but in India both cars will be sold alongside. The i20 is essentially a car that is intended for export markets but it is an important model for India as well. Since the i20 has been developed with the export markets in mind, you can expect the best quality standards from Hyundai. Interms of size, it is significantly biffer than the getz and more spacious as well. Equipment levels are expected to be high and the i20 will meet the latest European crash standards, so expect it to be safe as well. The i20 will have a wide range of engines. The base model will be powered by the 1.2 Kappa motor that has just been introduced in the i10. There could also be the larger 1.4 and 1.6 Sigma petrol engines whcih are significantly more powerful. Diesel power will come in the form of the potent 110bhp motor that powers the Verna.

The gearbox is light, the throw accurate and the clutch light, all this makes the i10 an ideal city companion. The additional power is a boon on highways, all you need is to shove the car into a lower gear and floor the accelerator to get an instant burst of power to help you move ahead of the slow moving truck up front. But the difference between the 1.2 and the 1.1 engines is less visible in the city. That’s because the smaller 1.1 litre unit offers good response from low speeds. Overall, the Kappa engine feels a step ahead and more refined than the 1.1 litre engine. And the Kappa’s trump card is expected to be fuel efficiency that could be the best in its class. Hyundai has also decided to offer an automatic gearbox on the car now. It’s not a new one and is carried over from the Santro. The Santro does come with an automatic gearbox, but it is available only on special order.

The Hyundai i10 may have a name that seems more like a residential address than a car name, but it sure is a star performer. Its compact proportions, best in class cabin and refined engine give the i10 all the features of a premium hatchback. Hyundai now wants to take the i10 package a step further so that the competition can continue playing catch up. The Kappa’s engine was originally developed as a 1248cc engine for the export market, but for India Hyundai has reduced the size 1.2 litres in order to avail of the excise benefits enjoyed by small cars to 1197cc. The engine is also built to meet ever tightening global emission norms. Hyundai will also offer this engine on the soon to be launched i20 hatchback the next gen Getz. The engine develops a generous 79bhp, which is 16bhp over the regular 1.1 Epsilon engine that the i10shares with the Santro and Getz.

Elantra to get new face

The Elantra is one car in Hyundai India’s portfolio that has not met with its due in India, largely because of its positioning and features. And Hyundai has been trying to work this one out for sometime. Earlier this year, it displayed the Elantra Avante the version that is sold in the US markets at the Auto Expo to gauge the response, which was lukewarm to say the least. Mainly because the Avante also had conservative and dated looks, which weren’t enough to take on the Octavia, Optra and the later the Civic. Elegant lines that are reminiscent of a distinct European styling and interiors that are completely refurbished. It is 170mm wider and 65mm taller than its predecessor. The makeover starts right in the front with a full-fledged, horizontally split chrome grille replacing the vertical slats. Complementing that are the pullback headlamps, a style that is now almost the order of the day, while ORVMs now get ontegrated turn indicators, lending a more upmarket feel.
