The Nano will be Tata Motor’s gift to Indians this Diwali. It will come with a 624cc two cylinder petrol engine that delivers 33bhp and is capable of touching three digit speeds. Tata claims that you can manage to get 20kpl out of the petrol engine. The company is also developing a common rail diesel motor, which should be on sale sometime later. Where the Nano impresses thoroughly is in its interior space. According to Tata, the Nano will offer 21 percent more space over the Maruti 800 that’s largely due to the fact that the engine will be placed at the rear, over the rear wheels. In fact, the Nano is wider and taller than even the Maruti Alto. You will have a choice between a base and deluxe version, which will come without and with an AC respectively. There could be more feature-laden variants in the future. The base version, which has no features to speak of will come at the promised price of Rs 1lakh but by the time you get the keys in your hand, expect it to touch Rs 1.2 lakh. The Nano with air con and power windows could end up costing around Rs 1.5 lakh on road.
